    I recently purchased my first antique Disston back saw and would love some advice on how to tune it up and sharpen it. Here are some photos:

      Brit01425 has an excellent YouTube tutorial on sharpening western saws at the link below.  He covers several different saw configurations in detail.  Ron Herman has a DVD on sharpening saws that is also very good.

      I recently met Ron Herman at the Woodworking Shows and had him look at one of my saws.  As soon as he put it in the saw vise, we could both see the problem.  There was a raking light coming from a nearby window and I could clearly see there were still tiny flats on top some of the teeth.  Bottom line, have plenty of overhead light but make sure you have a raking light source as well.
