Right now I am planning to use a wedged tenon for the runners on my workbench. I have done through tenons but never wedged before. I am curious if anyone has advice for a first time wedge tenon builder? About how large should the tenon and wedge be? I am building it out of 4x4s.

Thanks for any help or advice.

    Seth

      Ooops….Tusk Tenon

So went to go gather some basic information until I heard from the fine folks here and realized that I am planning to build a tusk tenon not a wedge tenon. Thanks

I often use a machine to create the joint, then I use a chisel to add the mortise’s 5 degree taper to match the wedge. The joint should be designed so that the wedge simply sits because it will eventually seat lower. The mortise must first be reduced to the absolute minimal size before being manually fitted with the aforementioned mortise chisel.
