I am making a coffee table out of some sycamore with mild spalting and some nice reddish/pink figuring. I’m relatively new to woodworking but I have read that many oil based finishes leave sycamore with a sickly (for lack of a better term) yellow color. I have also spoken with a few people at my local sawmill who have reported using danish oil followed by a spray on poly with reportedly good results. I am not a huge fan of the gloss look poly often leaves. I want to use a finish that will enhance the figuring and at the same time not turn the wood an off yellow. I’ve also heard a clear shellac works well on sycamore. I am curious to the forum’s thoughts and am open to all suggestions to test out on some off cuts. Thanks for your time.
