looking at a #5 Stanley, that has red japanning, wondering if this is original or maybe someone refinished it this way. It’s more of a dark red/brick red color.

Not a Stanley Color

Stanley never produced Bailey hand planes with red japanning. They had a low cost line that was produced in multiple colors. The Four Square line was the most colorful. The colors were enamel, not japanning.

I think the Stanley 5 you see is not the original because the color in the original is a different red.

Because the red on the original Stanley 5 is a different shade from the red on the one you see, I believe that the one you have is not the original.
