<span style=”font-family: ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”>I have designed a two person piano bench based upon a number of different actual piano benches I have reviewed.  I am curious, why does every bench that I look at have the rails 1/16″ lower than the tops of the legs?  This means that the only support that the top lid receives is from resting on the four corner legs.  Is the reason to account for expansion since the rails c</span><span style=”font-family: ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”>ould expand twice as much as the legs given the direction of the grain of the legs versus the rails?</span>

Another option is, since so many piano benches are also used to store sheet music, the gap allows for air circulation to prevent moisture from building up? Just asking.

      Have fun.
