    Fantastic site you have here. I am very glad to have stumbled onto it. I decided to try and replace my bedroom doors with slab solid oak doors. I enjoyed the process of learning how to finish them, but then came time to cut the bottom down to fit ( I did do this before staining) and creating mortises for the hinges and strike plate? Although I made many errors and it came out looking rough, I enjoyed the process of working with hand tools and am looking forward to beginning my woodworking journey. I became hooked and have begun looking for information on how to learn how to do it the right way. I even have looked unsuccessfully for classes. Can anyone recommend a textbook of sorts for beginners?  Thank you.

      I think that Paul Sellers’ “Working Wood 1 & 2” is a great intro to traditional woodworking.  You can get it here.  $34.99 at Amazon and worth every penny.  Welcome to the forum.  Please post lots of questions – we’ll help you as much as we can.

        Paul Sellers

        I too am a fan of Paul Sellers. I stumbled across his Youtube channel, but didn’t know that he had written a book. Thanks for the info. I’ll have to get his book.

      I will second the suggestion of Paul Seller’s “Working Wood 1 & 2”. It comes with a book and DVDs. Personally I’m a visual learner so seeing someone, especially being able to watch it over and over again, do something helps me better “picture” what I read in books.

      Thanks RJ!  Much appreciated.  I have already received the book and am looking forward to looking at it this weekend.  I have a 1 year old, so it is difficult to find time to work on any projects.  Any suggestions in this department?  Ha, ha.

      I enjoyed reading “The New Traditional Woodworker” that Joshua recommended. I have not read Paul’s book (yet) so I can not compare the two. It read like a textbook but has good information. The second half of the book also give useful project ideas that are practical, build in complexity and on previous skills learned. For instance, I think the first project is a straight edge to help square work. I am also hoping to read “Handplanes” and “The Anarchist Tool Chest.” Otherwise I would just suggest subscribing to Joshua’s youtube and Paul Seller’s youtube as well. There is a lot of information just on the web.

      Thank you for the info Seth. I was unable to log in for a little while for some reason. I bought my first plane today and am looking forward to trying it out. It is a 9″ Ace Hardware bench plane. I found it at a flea market still in the box. It looks like it was used once or twice. I’m sure it was probably not the best but it was only 15$ so I thought I might give it a try.
