I usually use shellac or wipe on poly for finishing my bowls, depending on how tough of use they are likely to receive. I always figure poly is going to wear better than shellac, but I like the look and feel of shellac better. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a durable finish on bowls and other turned items that are not used for eating?

Have you tried wet sanding with 0000 steel wool after the wipe on poly? I usually wet sand with the 0000 steel wool until the surface looks dull and then go over it with a wax. I find that it leaves a nice smooth surface to the touch similar to shellac.

Thanks, I will give that a try. I have a few pens to make, but will be making some additional bowls for Christmas gifts.
