    Hi everyone…

Beginning woodworker here. I have been working on getting my bench plane skills up to snuff and have a question. After a surface has been planed and you want to check to ensure flatness: I have been using a 3/16″ wide aluminum rule (on edge) to check. I don’t have the best lighting in my garage, so I shine a flashlight behind the rule to see if there is light coming through. Sometimes, I can see an obvious gap but other times, it is a shimmer of light that seems to come and go as I sight along the surface. I currently don’t get a “dead flat” surface to start a reference face. Any thoughts or advice? I am using a Bailey jointer plane (transitional) – 22″ long. Thanks,
    Mike
