I run a small wood shop program for teenage boys. I don’t charge for the shop or my time so money is sort of an issue. I went to my local lumber yard and asked about glulam beams that might be unsaleable (water damage, special order-odd size, etc.) Because I had a long standing relationship with this lumber yard they gave me two glulams (3 1/2 x 12 x 23′) which netted me the under structure for 4 Moravian benches and 1 top. Another vendor gave me free two glued up walnut table tops (1 1/2 x 36 x 72) that were left over from a restaurant order. That provided the other 3 Moravian tops (we are not using tool trays).
The point here is that there are resources out there that you may be able to get for very reasonable if you are willing to ask the right questions. Think outside the box.
